Unidym to develop coating tools

unidym_cntUnidym has signed an agreement with Tokyo Electron that will lead to the development of large-scale manufacturing equipment by TEL for carbon nanotube-based solar cells and displays. Under the terms of the deal, Unidym and TEL will develop a coating tool for solar and LCD manufacturers to use in coating Unidym’s CNT-based electronic inks into their devices.

The companies said they will cooperate in marketing the CNT electronic inks and coating equipment to their joint customers.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“The partnership with TEL is critical in providing a complete manufacturing solution to our customers in the LCD and solar industries,” said Mark Tilley, president/CEO of Arrowhead Research subsidiary Unidym. “TEL is one of the world leaders in wet coating technology, and they have direct channels to market in the display and solar industries.”

“We are impressed with Unidym’s leadership in expanding CNT applications into the electronics, display and PV markets," said Taku Kawauchi, marketing group leader for TEL's FPD business unit. "We believe Unidym’s CNT ink and our coating platform solution will present a great value to our customers.”
TEL's venture capital arm invested an undisclosed sum in Unidym in late 2008.
The Japanese capital equipment supplier has several other marketing and development agreements with companies in the solar PV sector, including Oerlikon Solar, Nanogram, and most notably, a joint venture with Sharp established in early 2008 to develop plasma CVD tools for thin-film solar production.
