As the 2010 American Solar Challenge is coming nearer, the University of Minnesota Solar Vehicle Project team has started hinting about what they have for the big occasion. In fact, they have planned to unveil their new solar-powered car, dubbed as Centaurus II, at the McNamara Alumni Center Plaza or the Electrical Engineering/Computer Science Building near the Lind Hall courtyard (if it rains) on May 7.
Drastically improved aerodynamics and solar array encapsulation for maximum speed and range are some of the changes that make the 3 feet tall, 16 feet long and 6 feet wide solar vehicle better than the previous eight solar vehicles. Centaurus II weighs about 400 pounds. A team of 30 students spent more than 50,000 hours over the last year to plan and build this car.
