The centre, based within the University of Melbourne, will focus on improving the energy efficiency of networks and technologies by drawing on a combination of Bell Labs' and the university's extensive experience in networking infrastructure.
Meanwhile just 1km away, RMIT University last year developed a Green IT Readiness Model and Assessement framework which is currently being used by the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) to inform their members of best practices and benchmarks they can use to promote their products and services.
And further up the coast, just below Sydney, Wollongong University established their Carbon Centric Computing Initiative (CCCI) in 2008, which was designed as a research program that would help bring "carbon centric" technologies to the market, as well as advocating Green IT and developing educational opportunities.
Where Australian university involvement in Green IT was lacking just over two years ago, it now seems the field as been recognised as a potential opportunity area to gain both research funding and showcase local talent in environmentally sustainable computing.
